What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a form of fixed (non-removable) prosthesis that includes the dental implant post, abutment, and the restoration (false tooth). The dental implant post is the part of the assembly that is placed into the jawbone, although there are also zygomatic implants that are supported by the zygomatic bone (cheek bone). The abutment serves as an interface between the implant post and the restoration. When an implant is used to replace multiple teeth, a multi-unit abutment is used. In all likelihood, you will have a provisional (temporary) restoration when you first receive your dental implants. A restoration can be used for a single tooth, multiple teeth, or a full-arch bridge

Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

Dental implants are widely regarded as the gold standard of tooth replacement procedures. Although, like other types of surgical interventions, dental implants aren’t for everyone. Let’s start with some of the contraindications that could exclude you medically from dental implants. These include the following:

Healthy jawbone. First off, since dental implants are held in place by bone, you need to have sufficient bone volume and density before this procedure is considered. If you are lacking in bone tissue, a bone graft can be performed to help regenerate bone tissue. Although, bone grafts may not be suitable if you currently have an infection at the implant site, or you are currently undergoing treatment for a spinal insufficiency fracture.

Healthy gums. Preferably, you should be free of gum disease and gingivitis, as these can affect the healing process. In some instances, antibiotics, gum disease treatments, and other remedial measures can be applied to clear out the infection.

Financial considerations. It’s important to note that, since dental implants require the skills of several specialists, the cost of dental implants may be prohibitively expensive. And, your dental insurance may cover only a portion of the procedure.
