Periodontal Maintenance in Raleigh

Periodontal maintenance is similar to the standard dental cleanings you receive from your family dentist, but there are some notable differences. For starters, regular prophylactic cleanings are all about preventing disease, whereas periodontal maintenance is performed to manage diseases such as gingivitis, periodontal disease, and periodontitis. If you have been referred to our practice for periodontal maintenance, please call us today to schedule an appointment

Periodontal Maintenance

When you visit Brier Creek Implants & Periodontics for periodontal maintenance, Dr. Wu will provide the care needed for those patients who may have experienced periodontal disease.

Dental scaling uses either a manual or ultrasonic scaler to remove calculus (tartar) from the surface of the teeth. The reason calculus removal is a priority is that calculus becomes home to bacteria that can damage the teeth, bone tissue, gums, and ligaments, ultimately resulting in tooth loss.

Root planing is similar to dental scaling, except the calculus and plaque are being removed from below the gum line. The periodontist or hygienist will then use a tool to smooth the surface of the tooth below the crown in order to encourage better attachment between the tooth and gingival tissue.
